------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Andrew Lemmon

Hi, my name is Andrew Lemmon. I'm a 40 year Canadian male living in Busan, South Korea. I am  an English Professor at Kyungnam College of Information and Technology (경남 정보 대학). I  am married to a wonderful Korean woman.
I have been playing Magic: The Gathering since 1994, though I stopped for a number of years  after Mercadian Masques was released. I started playing again during the Time Spiral Block.  I play at Grid in Busan and sometimes I do go and play at SS Duelzone in Daegu.

I was looking at the event schedule one day on magicthegathering.com and saw that there was  going to be the Grand Prix (GP) in Kitakyushu. I asked one of the Japanese Professors at my  College where that was and he told me that is was just north of Fukuoka. Since it was close  to Busan, I decided to go and play, since I had never played in a GP before. I went to a  travel agency in Busan that gives very good package deals from Busan to Fukuoka for  foreigners in Korea who need to go and do a work visa run to the Korean Consulate in Fukuoka  and got the package to be able to go.

Unfortunately, I didn't do very well. There were about 500 people in the Grand Prix and I  finished around 320th with a 2 win 4 loss 2 draw record. When I lost my second match, I had  been eliminated from Day 2 of the Grand Prix, because I also had a draw, but I went to play  magic and dropping never even crossed my mind. My rating probably dropped because of it, but  that wasn't a concern for me. Though it was a good learning experience, as I did watch a  little as to how some of the Pro Magic Players decide as to what cards would make it into  their decks. It was interesting to see how they organized their cards and then start making  the decisions as to what they would play and what they wouldn't.

My goal for the event was to try and make Day 2, but just in case I didn't, I brought a  Legacy Deck with me to play in the Legacy format side event. First prize was the choice of 1  of two P9 cards, with second place receiving the other card. 3rd and 4th would receive 2  non-English black bordered Tropical Islands and 5th to 8th would receive 1 Revised Badlands  each. I figured that maybe if my deck was good enough, that I could at least Top 8 and then  have a chance to win one of the P9 cards.

Well, my deck was more than good enough, as I piled up win after win and ended up winning  the entire tournament and chose a Mox Jet as my prize. Second place received a Mox Pearl. My  final record was 8 match wins, 0 match losses and 2 Intentional Draws. I had 16 game wins  and only 2 game losses in all my matches.

I went to some websites on the Internet and looked over Legacy deck lists. I decided on  Legacy Zoo as my deck, as it was the deck that I had the most cards for. With the help of 이 준영, 심대훈 and 유익환 (players I play with in Busan), I was able to get the cards I  considered using that I didn't have myself. After talking with a number of the wonderful  players I met at the Grand Prix and discussing some of the possible cards that I might have  needed, I made my final decision as to what the list would look like, as I registered my  deck. The final list was this:

Creatures
3 Grim Lavamancer
4 Kird Ape
4 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Qasali Pridemage
2 Tarmogoyf
4 Wild Nacatl

Spells
4 Chain Lightning
2 Fireblast
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
4 Path to Exile

Lands
3 Arid Mesa
3 Plateau
2 Savannah

1 Skarrg, the Rage Pits
4 Taiga
4 Windswept Heath
4 Wooded Foothills

Sideboard
3 Burrenton Forge-Tender
3 Ethersworn Canonist
2 Pyroblast
2 Red Elemental Blast
3 Pyrostatic Pillar
2 Relic of Progenitus

Cheap efficient spells for the creatures and spells, just like a Zoo Deck should run. When  looking at the lists on the Internet,  I saw many were running a lot of fetch lands, but few  were running Knight of the Reliquary. They were going with the full set of Tarmogofys. I  figured, with 11 fetch lands in the deck and possible hits from Wastelands by my opponents,  the Knights were a much better choice and they were. They were usually coming into play at  5/5, where the Goyfs were at most only getting to 4/5. Path to Exile was much superior in  this deck than Swords to Plowshares, as any life gain by an opponent would make it that much  harder to finish them off and also since the format is dominated by non-basic lands, a  player is not likely to search for a basic land.

Sideboard choices were made based on what I would potentially need. The Forge-Tenders were  needed for mirror matches and against the Red Burn decks. The Canonists were originally put  in to combat Storm Decks, but ended up being extremely useful against a Cascade based deck.  Pyroblasts and Red Elemental Blasts were to combat Blue and notably Force of Will.  Pyrostatic Pillars, which almost made the Main Deck, were put in for some extra versatility  and possible extra game ending damage. The Relics were for any Graveyard based decks. Other  choices included Price of Progress, as the format is dominated by non-basic lands, Choke,  and Gaddock Teeg.

Pyroblast나 Red Elemental Blast는 Blue aggro나 Force of Will에 대응하기 위해 씁니다.

Round 1 vs Cascade LD
win 2 - 1

Game 1
Double Mulligan and kept an iffy starting hand. Got him to 4 before his third cascade into  Boom/Bust sealed the game for him as I then couldn't pay the upkeep on my creatures from his  Magus of the Moat. Trinisphere completed his lock.

Games 2 and 3
Opening hands of 2 fetch lands, Wild Nacatls, sideboarded Ethersworn Canonist, Kird Apes and  some burn spells got me rolling. Timely Qasali Pridemage to take out Ghostly Prison allowed  me to romp.

Round 2 vs CounterTop Goyf.
win 2 - 0
Game 1
Burn spells on his turn when he was lower on life forced him to use his Force of Wills so I  could Path to Exile his Tarmogoyfs and be able to play Knight of the Reliquary on my turn.

Game 2
Red Elemental Blast/Pyroblast took out his Counterbalance. Allowed me to get enough into  play to get him on the defensive once again. Engineered Explosives reset the board for him,  but with him at 8 life and me with 6 lands in the graveyard, I got a Knight of the Reliquary  into play. No answer for him on his turn and he scooped.

Round 3 Mirror Match
win 2 - 0

Both games, I drew more burn spells to clear his creatures. Skarrg, the Rage Pits found with  a Knight, allowed me to push through enough extra damage with the trample to make the  difference. The big difference between our decks was I used Skarrg, the Rage Pits and he was  using Umezawa's Jitte. He got the Jitte into play, but it slowed him down from being able to  play creatures and spells against me. I was able to sit back and use my burn when he would  equip a creature with the Jitte and give me a clear path to attack. Sideboarded Forge- Tenders kept a couple of my creatures alive when I blocked his Goyfs and he tried to burn  them out. I would use Grim Lavamancer to get the extra damage to kill his Goyfs.

Round 4 not sure of what he was playing, as I didn`t see a lot of his cards. The guess is  Eva Green with some white.
won 2 - 0

Game 1
Even hit by 2 Thoughtseize and 2 Cabal Therapy, I kept drawing enough creatures and burn to  easily run him over.

Game 2
Cabal Therapy at the start didn't hit me for much and then other than a couple Swords to  Plowshares he didn't draw much. Path to Exile on his Goyfs kept my way clean to, once again,  run him over.

Round 5 vs Mono Red
win 2 - 0

Grim Lavamancer removing Magus of the Moon kept my green and white mana available for  casting and burn took care of his other creatures in both games.

Rounds 6 and 7 were intentional draws, as that`s all I and my opponents needed to Top 8.

At this point, while waiting for the last matches of Round 7 to finish, panic set in. A very  nice Japanese gentleman loaned me the second Fireblast I wanted for the deck. He didn't make  the Top 8 and thus was leaving to go home. I had to give him back his card. If I didn't find  a Fireblast to use, I wouldn't have been able to play in the Top 8. A very helpful Japanese  Judge, who had been translating all the cards for me that I didn't know, as they were in  Japanese, went around asking many of the players around if they had a Fireblast I could use.  He ended up finding one at one of the card dealers. I gave him the money to pay for it, a  Chinese version, and was able to continue in the Top 8.

Quarterfinals vs CounterTop Goyf again.
win 2 - 0

Pretty much the same as above, except in Game 2 he kept and got stuck on a 1 land opening  hand with a Top and he couldn't find any more land. I felt a little bad for this player, as  he only lost 2 matches in the entire tournament and they were both to me

Semi-Final vs Cephalid
win 2 - 0
Kept burning out his creatures to keep my way clear. Big Knight of the Reliquarys allowed me  to push through enough damage to finish him off.

Final vs Merfolk
win 2 - 1

Game 1
Grim Lavamancer and burn kept his board clear for my Nacatls. He scooped when a 7/7 Knight  hit the board

Game 2
Another mulligan to 5 for me just didn't allow me enough threats and be able to keep his  board clear. A couple Force of Wills to stop me from putting threats on the board, then  Umezawa's Jitte and Wake Thrasher finished me off rather quickly. Though he was making huge  mistakes with Wake Thrasher. At the end of my turn, he didn't tap soem extra land for the   Wake Thrasher in play, which did give me an extra turn or two to try and find some answers.

Game 3
With 2 early Wild Nacatls on the board and hitting a fetch land draw after 2 Wastelands by  him, he scooped when the first Knight of the Reliquary hit the board, coming in at 8/8,  giving me the win.

 8. Mox Jet

It was a very good feeling and I was quite ecstatic. I had never played in a Legacy  Tournament before and I was just hoping to do well. It is nice to have a Mox again. I used  to have a couple, but I needed money when I was in university and thus sold the ones that I  used to own.

Also, it was very nice to have a number of the other non-Japanese players cheering for me,  including some of the Pro Players in attendance. I believe I was the only non-Japanese  player to Top 8 in any of the events they had during the Sunday portion of the Grand Prix.

Thanks! Have a good Magic Life!
